JUNIOR KUNG FU CURRICULUM

Level 1 Beginner

The children begin with no sash, signifying "emptiness ". They must learn the first foundational skills in order to obtain the first sash. There is a 3 month minimum waiting period for students to enhance their skills and master prerequisites before Sash tests are available with 75% attendance record.

White Sash Prerequisites:
  • The Four Warm Ups (Ability to properly perform Loose Hands, Swings, Knee Rotations, and Leg Stretch, Hip Rotation on front and back leg)
  • Rolls (Static Rolls) (Proper performance of the static roll)
  • Break falls (flip-flops) (Proper performance of the flip-flop)
  • Wrestling Skills (Demonstrates basic looseness and early "feeling" skills) ?
  • Basic Horse Stance

White Sash Prerequisites:
  • Power Stepping forwards and backwards
  • Brush knee attack, Repulse monkey attack Students must fluidly perform these basic kung fu movements
  • Horse Stance Punches (single, double, triple) (Smooth, loose, relaxed punches)
  • Break falls (pre-side) (Proper performance of the side break fall)
  • Wrestling Skills Demonstrates basic looseness and sensitivity
Purple Sash Prerequisites:
  • Toe Kicks (Strong, balanced toe kicks)
  • Step-Forward Punch (Coordinated and strong, whip-action)
  • Break falls (pre-back) (Proper performance of he pre-side break fall) ?
  • Wrestling Skills (Demonstrates basic looseness and early "feeling" skills)
  • Demonstrate one technique of their choosing
Level 2 Intermediate

Blue Sash Prerequisites:
  • Steps 1-5 of the Children's Tai Chi Form (Fluid, accurate performance)
  • Heal Kicks (Strong, balanced heal kicks)
  • Break falls (pre-forward)
  • Rolls (low stance) (Proper performance of low stance rolls)
  • Wrestling Skills (Demonstrates mild understanding of "attaching" and "following")

Green Sash Prerequisites:
  • Steps 5-10 of Children's Form (Fluid, accurate performance)
  • Side Kicks (Balanced, flexible side kicks)
  • Side Break falls (Proper performance of side break falls)
  • Wrestling Skills (Demonstrates mild understanding of "attaching" and "following")

Red Sash Prerequisites:
  • Steps 10-15 of Children's Form (Fluid, accurate performance)
  • Push Hands Single Form (Fluid, accurate performance)
  • Static Push Hands (Proper performance with some "yielding" ability)
  • Forward Break falls (Proper performance of forward break falls)
  • Stepping Rolls (Proper performance of stepping rolls)
  • Wrestling Skills (Demonstrates mild understanding of "attaching" and "following")

Level 3 Advanced

Orange Sash Prerequisites:
  • Back Break falls
  • Advanced Applications (repulse monkey, needle at sea-bottom etc)
  • Basic Sparring Skills
  • Walking Push Hands
  • Steps 1-15 of Adult Square Form (Fluid, accurate performance)
  • Wrestling Skills

Yellow Sash Prerequisites:
  • Rolls (running)
  • Advanced Applications
  • Intermediate Sparring Skills
  • Half Step Push Hands
  • Steps 15-35 of Adult Square Form (Fluid, accurate performance)
  • Wrestling Skills
Gold Sash Prerequisites:
  • Sparring Timing Skills
  • Advanced Applications
  • Advanced Sparring Skills
  • One Handed Offset
  • Steps 35-54 of Adult Square form (Fluid, accurate performance)

A class will be an hour long at 2 sessions a week expected per child. A typical class will run like this…

LEVEL 1 CURRICULUM FOR FIRST THREE SASHES

Greet

Jogging' 5 minutes

Stretching' 10 minutes

Cardiovascular and Muscular Strength Exercises' Jumping Jacks, Push Ups, Crunches, Squats, Side Stepping etc.' 10 minutes

Kung Fu Wrestling Skills' Static Rolls, Flip-Flops, Pre-Side Breakfalls, Pre-Back
Breakfalls, and basic wrestling skills (in accordance with student's level)' 15 minutes

Kung Fu Techniques' Four Warm Ups, Power Stepping, Horse Stance Punches, Toe Kicks, Step-Forward Punches (group is split into two groups or more depending on which level they are at) ' 15 minutes
